Design Flow FAQ

Is RealTime Designer a timing closure tool i.e. replacing P&R?

No. We expect our results to be a better starting point for P&R. You will still need to take our results through physical synthesis for fine-tuning.

My flow is a hybrid flow of Synopsys and Cadence. Things are working for me - why should I look at RT?

What you are basically saying is that Synthesis is a solved problem. Do you fly? Let’s say you fly from NY to SFO in 6 hours. If you had a flight that would take 20 minutes, would you take that? Exactly!

Given you have a different placement tool as compared to Synopsys, Magma, Cadence, etc., why would it your placement work?  From a flow point of view

Oasys placement has been used in conjunction with all the various flow there. Oasys placement is used to drive better quality of results and remove the need for wire load models.

How good is your floor planning?

We expect you to have a Floorplan. Our capability for floor planning is there for the seed/RTL floor planning only. We expect you to use your favorite floor planner.

How do you fit in to my P&R flow given your high capacity?

We work within your existing flow and use your partitioning and budgeting tool/flow in order to enable your P&R tools/flow.

How does RealTime Designer's router correlate to the various vendors P&R tools?

We use the same technology used in physical synthesis tools. We have gone through all the various flow.  It correlates as well as existing physical synthesis tools correlate to the routers.

How easy is RT to adopt?

We have designed RT to be standards based and so it is easy to adopt.

What about formal verification?

There should not be any difference in verifying our results compared to what you will do with existing synthesis tools. We have a mechanism to output directives/hints for hierarchical verification regarding optimization that occurred at the hierarchical boundaries that can be used to speed up the verification process. We have fit in to existing design flows.
